Thesis and dissertation printing turns your finished academic document into a bound, shelf-ready book. After years of work, the final PDF deserves more than a stapled office printout. We print your thesis or dissertation on archival, acid-free paper and bind it as a durable hardcover or a clean perfect bound softcover, so you have a permanent copy for your department, your university library, and your own shelf.
Perfect bound and spiral have no minimum, so you can print a single softcover copy. Hardcover, the library standard, has a three copy minimum, which fits the set most graduates need anyway. The calculator above quotes your exact project in real time, with the same quality on every copy.
How to print and bind a thesis or dissertation
Printing a thesis or dissertation through YourBookPress takes four steps, from your final PDF to bound copies in hand. The same process works whether you are printing a required deposit copy, a personal keepsake, or a set for your committee and family.
-
1
Prepare your document
Compile your full thesis into a single document, including the title page, abstract, table of contents, chapters, references, and any appendices. Word, LaTeX, InDesign, and Google Docs all work. Format the document to your final trim size, 8.5 by 11 inches is the standard for US theses, and leave a wider inner margin so no text is lost in the binding. Check your university's binding guidelines before you finalize the layout, since many institutions specify margins, trim size, and front-matter order.
-
2
Export a print-ready PDF
Export to PDF at 300 DPI with all fonts fully embedded. Font embedding matters more for a thesis than for almost any other document, because equations, special characters, non-English text, and LaTeX typesetting can shift or drop if the fonts are not embedded. If your thesis includes color charts, maps, or figures, set those images to CMYK color. Add 0.125 inch bleed only if a page or the cover runs color all the way to the edge.
-
3
Upload and configure
Use the calculator on this page to choose your binding, paper, color mode, and quantity. Our upload system automatically checks your PDF for common issues like low-resolution images, wrong dimensions, and color space problems, and shows you exactly what to fix. See our print a book from PDF guide for full file preparation details.

4
Review your proof and receive your copies
Use the built-in cover designer or upload your own cover, then review your digital proof. Approve it, and your thesis goes into production. Standard production takes about a week, then your bound copies ship to you.
Choosing your thesis binding
The binding decides how your thesis looks on a shelf and how long it lasts. Three of our four bindings suit a thesis, and which one is right depends on whether the copy is a permanent record or a working draft.
Hardcover (case bound), the library standard
Hardcover case binding is the standard for a permanent thesis or dissertation, the same construction libraries use for their permanent collections. The rigid cover protects the pages for decades and gives a doctoral or master's thesis the presentation it has earned. This is the usual choice for a university deposit copy and for the copy you keep. Hardcover has a three copy minimum, which suits most graduates anyway, since the common order is one copy for the library, one to keep, and one for an advisor or family.
Perfect bound (softcover), no minimum
Perfect bound creates a clean, flat-spine softcover at a lower cost, with no minimum, so you can order a single copy. Many departments accept a perfect bound submission, and it is a practical choice for personal copies or for sharing chapters with your committee during review.
Spiral, for a working draft
Spiral binding lays completely flat and folds back on itself, which makes it useful for a working or review draft your committee will mark up, or a copy you want open on a desk beside a laptop. It is rarely the final deposit copy, but it is the most practical format for an active, in-progress thesis.
Saddle stitch, for short documents
Saddle stitch is a stapled booklet format best for documents under about 80 pages, so it suits a short proposal or a single chapter rather than a full thesis.
The copies you actually need
Most graduates do not print just one thesis. A typical order covers several distinct needs:
- The deposit copy your university library requires, usually hardcover, to a specific binding specification.
- A personal copy to keep, the one that goes on your own shelf for good.
- Committee and advisor copies, sometimes expected as a thank-you for the people who supervised the work.
- Family copies, for the parents, partners, and mentors who supported you through it.
Because perfect bound and spiral have no minimum, and hardcover has a three copy minimum, you can order exactly the set you need in a single run, with the same quality on every copy.
Single sided or double sided
We print single sided or double sided. Universities often specify one or the other for the deposit copy, so this is one of the first things to confirm in your institution's binding guidelines. Double-sided printing roughly halves the page count and the spine width, which lowers cost and makes a thick dissertation more manageable. Single-sided printing is traditional for archival copies and leaves the back of each page blank. Whichever you choose, set up your PDF to match, and remember that a bound book needs a slightly wider inner margin than a document meant for a ring binder or a screen.
Thesis specifications
Sizes
| Size | Dimensions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Letter | 8.5" x 11" | The US standard for theses and dissertations |
| A4 | 8.27" x 11.69" | The standard for institutions outside the US |
| Executive | 7" x 10" | Text-heavy humanities and social science work |
| US Trade | 6" x 9" | A compact, book-like keepsake edition |
Paper
70# uncoated cream is the classic choice for a text thesis, easy on the eyes for long reading and writable with pen. 80# coated white is brighter and reproduces charts and figures more sharply. 100# glossy is reserved for image-heavy work where figure quality is critical.
Color
Standard B&W suits a text-only thesis and is the most affordable option. If your thesis includes color figures, the color tier sets the paper: standard color prints on 80# coated paper, and premium color prints on 100# glossy paper. Many graduates print the body in black and white and reserve color only for theses with essential color figures, since black and white printing is substantially cheaper.
Preparing your file, margins, fonts, and figures
A thesis has a few file-prep details that matter more than they do for an ordinary book.
Binding margin. A bound book loses a few millimeters of the inner edge into the spine, so leave a wider inner margin, the gutter, than you would for a document read on screen or in a ring binder. If your university specifies a binding margin, use that number. If not, a generous inner margin keeps your text clear of the spine, and we can confirm the right allowance for your binding before you order.
Embed every font. Equations, symbols, diacritics, and non-English passages depend on embedded fonts. Export your PDF with all fonts embedded so nothing shifts between your screen and the printed page. This is the single most common cause of surprises in a printed thesis.
Figures and images. Place figures at 300 DPI and set color figures to CMYK so they reproduce accurately. Low-resolution screenshots are the usual reason a figure prints blurry.
Print PDF, not PDF/A. Many universities ask for a PDF/A file for the digital deposit in their repository. For printing, a standard high-resolution print PDF is best. Keep your PDF/A for the institution, and send us a print-ready PDF.
Thesis and dissertation printing cost
Your price depends on page count, binding, interior color, and quantity, not on weight. A hardcover thesis costs more than a perfect bound softcover of the same length, color costs more than black and white, and the per-copy cost drops as you add copies. Thesis orders are usually small, so the tables below are rough guides for a typical 150 page thesis at common quantities. Use the calculator above for an exact price on your specs.
Perfect bound softcover: 150-page, 8.5" x 11", black and white, 70# uncoated
| Quantity | Per copy | You save |
|---|---|---|
| 1 copy | $7.94 | - |
| 3 copies | $7.66 | 4% |
| 5 copies | $7.58 | 5% |
| 10 copies | $7.46 | 6% |
| 25 copies | $7.19 | 9% |
Hardcover: 150-page, 8.5" x 11", black and white, 70# uncoated
| Quantity | Per copy | You save |
|---|---|---|
| 3 copies (minimum) | $16.17 | - |
| 5 copies | $16.00 | 1% |
| 10 copies | $15.75 | 3% |
| 25 copies | $15.17 | 6% |
Ways to keep the cost down: print in black and white if your thesis has no essential color figures, print double sided to roughly halve the page count, choose perfect bound for personal copies and reserve hardcover for the deposit and keepsake copies, and order your full set in one run. For a deeper breakdown across every binding type, see our book printing cost guide.
Turning your dissertation into a bound book
A finished dissertation is a book in everything but binding. Many graduates print a hardcover copy of a completed thesis as a permanent keepsake, long after the submission deadline has passed, with no deadline pressure at all. Some choose the compact 6 by 9 inch trim for a copy that sits on a shelf like a published book, design a cover through the cover tool, and order a few copies for family and mentors. If you want to go further, ask us about a leather-look cover or foil lettering on the spine through a custom quote, and we will confirm what is possible for your project.
Meeting your university's binding requirements
Universities set their own requirements for trim size, margins, paper, single or double sided, color, and spine and cover lettering, and they vary widely between institutions. Check your department or library's thesis and dissertation binding guidelines before you order, and configure your book to match. If you are unsure whether we can meet a specific requirement, send us the details through a custom quote and we will confirm before anything goes to print. We would rather confirm the exact specification up front than have you guess.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I print just one copy of my thesis or dissertation?
Yes, as a softcover. Perfect bound and spiral have no minimum, so you can order a single copy. Hardcover has a three copy minimum, which fits the usual order of one copy for the library, one to keep, and one for an advisor or family.
Can you bind a thesis or dissertation in hardcover?
Yes. Hardcover case binding is the standard for a permanent thesis, with rigid covers and a printed spine, the same construction libraries use. Hardcover has a three copy minimum.
How much does it cost to print and bind a thesis?
Cost depends on page count, binding, interior color, and quantity, not weight. Use the calculator on this page for an exact price. Black and white is substantially cheaper than color, and per-copy cost drops as you add copies.
How long does thesis printing and binding take?
Standard production takes about a week, then your copies ship to you. Order with your deadline in mind, since every copy is printed and bound to order. For a keepsake copy of an already-submitted thesis, timing is rarely an issue.
Can I print my thesis single sided or double sided?
Both. Many universities require one or the other for the deposit copy, so check your institution's requirements first. Double sided roughly halves the page count and the cost.
What paper should I use for a thesis?
For standard text, 70# uncoated cream or 80# coated white works well. If your thesis has color figures, standard color prints on 80# coated and premium color prints on 100# glossy.
What trim size should a thesis be?
8.5 by 11 inches is the US standard, and A4 is standard outside the US. A compact 6 by 9 inch trim is a good choice for a book-like keepsake edition.
How should I set my margins for binding?
Leave a wider inner margin, the gutter, so text is not lost in the spine. If your university specifies a binding margin, use that number. If not, we can confirm the right allowance for your binding before you order.
Why do my equations and symbols need embedded fonts?
Equations, special characters, and non-English text depend on the fonts being embedded in your PDF. Export with all fonts embedded so nothing shifts between your screen and the printed page. This is the most common cause of surprises in a printed thesis.
Can you add gold foil lettering to the spine?
Foil lettering and leather-look bindings are specialty finishes we handle through a custom quote. Send us your department's requirements and we will confirm what is possible for your project.
Do you meet my university's binding requirements?
Check your institution's thesis and dissertation binding guidelines, then configure your book to match. If you are unsure about a specific requirement, send us the details and we will confirm before anything goes to print.
Can I turn my finished dissertation into a bound book to keep?
Yes. Many graduates print a hardcover copy of a completed dissertation as a permanent keepsake or a gift for family and advisors, separate from any required submission copy.
What file format do you need?
A print-ready PDF, at 300 DPI, with all fonts embedded, and color figures in CMYK. Keep your PDF/A version for your university's digital repository, and send us a standard print PDF for printing.
