Color
Standard B&W suits a text-only thesis and is the most affordable option. If your thesis includes color figures, the color tier sets the paper: standard color prints on 80# coated paper, and premium color prints on 100# glossy paper. Many graduates print the body in black and white and reserve color only for theses with essential color figures, since black and white printing is substantially cheaper.
Preparing your file, margins, fonts, and figures
A thesis has a few file-prep details that matter more than they do for an ordinary book.
Binding margin. A bound book loses a few millimeters of the inner edge into the spine, so leave a wider inner margin, the gutter, than you would for a document read on screen or in a ring binder. If your university specifies a binding margin, use that number. If not, a generous inner margin keeps your text clear of the spine, and we can confirm the right allowance for your binding before you order.
Embed every font. Equations, symbols, diacritics, and non-English passages depend on embedded fonts. Export your PDF with all fonts embedded so nothing shifts between your screen and the printed page. This is the single most common cause of surprises in a printed thesis.
Figures and images. Place figures at 300 DPI and set color figures to CMYK so they reproduce accurately. Low-resolution screenshots are the usual reason a figure prints blurry.
Print PDF, not PDF/A. Many universities ask for a PDF/A file for the digital deposit in their repository. For printing, a standard high-resolution print PDF is best. Keep your PDF/A for the institution, and send us a print-ready PDF.
