What Is Comic Book Printing?
Comic book printing is the production of sequential art publications in physical book form. The modern comic book printing industry covers three main formats: floppy single issues (24 to 32 pages, stapled), trade paperback graphic novels (64 to 200 pages, glue-bound), and hardcover collected editions (premium volumes for Kickstarter and library editions).
At YourBookPress, we print comics for indie creators, webcomic artists, and small press publishers. There is no minimum order, and your print run can scale from 1 copy to 5,000+ as your audience grows.
Comic Book, Graphic Novel, or Manga: What's the Difference?
The three formats share the same printing process but differ in size, page count, and binding choice.
| Format | Typical Size | Page Count | Binding | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Comic book (floppy) | 6.625" x 10.25" | 24 to 32 pages | Saddle stitch | Single issues, convention sales |
| Graphic novel | 6" x 9" or 6.625" x 10.25" | 64 to 200 pages | Perfect bound | Trade paperback collected editions |
| Manga (tankobon) | 5" x 7.5" or 5.5" x 8.25" | 160 to 200 pages | Perfect bound | Japanese-style volumes |
| Hardcover collected edition | 7" x 10.5" or larger | 200 to 400 pages | Case bound | Kickstarter rewards, library editions |
The deciding factor is usually page count. Under 48 pages goes saddle stitch. 64 to 200 pages goes perfect bound. Over 200 pages benefits from hardcover binding for durability.

CMYK Conversion for Digital Comic Art
Most digital comic art is created in RGB color mode for screen display. Printing requires CMYK color mode. RGB has a wider color gamut than CMYK, which means some vivid screen colors look duller when printed.
Before submitting your file:
- • Convert RGB images to CMYK in Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or Affinity Photo
- • Pay attention to bright reds, oranges, and electric blues, which shift the most
- • Avoid using 100% black (K=100) for large solid areas. Use rich black (C=60, M=40, Y=40, K=100) instead for deeper black reproduction
- • Order a physical proof if your work depends heavily on exact color reproduction
If you submit an RGB file, our prepress team will convert it to CMYK and flag any significant color shifts before printing. You will see the corrected file in your digital proof.
How Much Does It Cost to Print a Comic Book?
Comic book printing costs depend on three factors: format, page count, and quantity. The same comic costs significantly less per copy at higher quantities because setup costs are spread across more units.
32-page floppy comic (full color, 6.625" x 10.25")
| Quantity | Per copy | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 copy | $18 | $18 |
| 25 copies | $6 | $150 |
| 100 copies | $3.50 | $350 |
| 500 copies | $2.25 | $1,125 |
| 1,000 copies | $1.85 | $1,850 |
120-page graphic novel (full color, 6" x 9", perfect bound)
| Quantity | Per copy | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 copy | $26 | $26 |
| 25 copies | $12 | $300 |
| 100 copies | $7.50 | $750 |
| 500 copies | $5.25 | $2,625 |
| 1,000 copies | $4.50 | $4,500 |

Where to Print Your Comic Book
Self-published comic creators have three main printing options:
1. Online comic book printers like YourBookPress
Online printers handle the full process: upload, prepress, proofing, printing, and shipping. No minimums, instant pricing, direct delivery. This works for runs of 1 to 5,000 copies.
2. Specialty offset printers for high-volume runs
Some printers specialize in offset-only comic printing for runs of 1,000+ copies. Minimums are typically 500 to 1,000 copies, turnaround is 4 to 8 weeks, and per-unit pricing is slightly lower at very high volume. This option fits established creators with proven demand.
3. Print on demand platforms
Platforms like KDP Print and IngramSpark print one book at a time as orders come in. The per-unit cost is high ($8 to $20 for a typical floppy), but there is no upfront inventory. This works for digital-first creators who do not want to manage shipping.
For most indie creators selling at conventions or fulfilling Kickstarter campaigns, an online printer hits the right balance: low minimums, competitive per-copy cost at 100 to 1,000 quantities, and direct shipping to you for hand-fulfillment.
Custom Comic Book Printing for Indie Creators
Custom comic book printing means you control every aspect of your book: trim size, paper weight, cover stock, page count, interior color, and binding type. Unlike platform-locked print on demand, working with a direct printer means you keep 100% of the rights, 100% of the profits, and 100% of the creative control.
Indie comic creators typically use custom printing for:
- • Kickstarter and crowdfunding fulfillment. Backer rewards usually need 200 to 2,000 copies delivered within 60 to 90 days of campaign close.
- • Comic convention sales. Exhibitors at San Diego Comic-Con, NYCC, and regional cons typically order 100 to 500 copies per title.
- • Comic shop direct distribution. Local comic shops accept consignment from indie creators. Print runs of 50 to 200 work for testing market response.
- • Webcomic-to-print collections. Webcomic creators print collected volumes for Kickstarter or merchandise tables.
- • Graphic memoir and literary comics. Personal nonfiction comics often print 200 to 500 copies for literary distribution.
- • Mini-comics and zines. Short 8 to 24 page comics, often in runs of 25 to 100 for art events and zine fests.
Print on Demand Comic Books
Print on demand for comics works differently than for novels. True print-on-demand fulfillment (one book printed per order) typically costs $15 to $25 per copy, which is too high for convention sales or comic shop wholesale margins.
The model that works for most indie creators is short run batch printing:
- Print a moderate first run of 100 to 500 copies
- Sell at conventions, direct-to-fan, and through comic shops
- Reprint when you run low
This approach gives you wholesale per-copy pricing ($3 to $7 instead of $15 to $25) while keeping inventory risk low. For more on small-quantity comic printing, see our short run book printing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to print a comic book?
Comic book printing costs range from $1.85 per copy at 1,000 quantity to $18 for a single copy. A 32-page floppy comic in full color costs around $3.50 per copy at 100 copies. A 120-page perfect bound graphic novel costs around $7.50 per copy at 100 copies. Single copies start at $15 for a 32-page saddle stitch comic.
How to print a comic book?
To print a comic book, export your interior pages and cover as 300 DPI CMYK PDFs with 0.125 inch bleed, upload them through our configurator, approve the digital proof, and we print and ship within 14 to 21 days. There is no minimum order quantity.
Where can I print my comic book?
YourBookPress prints self-published comic books with no minimums and instant online pricing. Other options include print-on-demand platforms like KDP Print and IngramSpark, and specialty offset printers for runs of 1,000+ copies. For most indie creators, an online printer is the right balance of price, speed, and flexibility.
Can I print my own comic book?
Yes. You can print your own comic book through an online printer like YourBookPress with no minimum order. Single copies start at $15 for a 32-page floppy. Most creators print runs of 50 to 500 copies for convention sales, comic shop distribution, or Kickstarter fulfillment.
What paper are comic books printed on?
Most modern comic books are printed on 60lb to 70lb uncoated white paper for the interior and 80lb to 100lb gloss cover stock. For premium color reproduction, comic creators upgrade to 80lb or 100lb gloss text paper. Vintage newsprint paper is rarely used in modern indie comics due to durability issues.
What paper to use for comic book printing?
For most indie comics, 70lb uncoated white interior with a 14pt C2S gloss cover is the standard combination. For color-heavy art, upgrade to 80lb or 100lb gloss text interior paper. For black and white work, 60lb uncoated is the most economical choice.
What size is a standard comic book?
The standard American comic book size is 6.625" x 10.25". Graphic novels and trade paperbacks are typically 6" x 9" or 6.625" x 10.25". Japanese manga volumes are usually 5" x 7.5" (B6) or 5.5" x 8.25" (A5). European comic albums are 8.5" x 11.5".
Can you print short run comic books?
Yes. We print short runs from 1 to 500 copies. At 25 copies, a full color saddle stitch comic prints at around $6 per copy. At 100 copies, the per-copy cost drops to $3.50. Short run printing is common for first-issue test prints, convention test runs, and mini-comic projects.
Do you offer print on demand comic books?
YourBookPress works as a short run printer rather than true print-on-demand. Most indie comic creators print 50 to 500 copies in a batch (which gets wholesale pricing of $3 to $7 per copy) and reprint when they sell through, instead of paying $15+ per copy for true POD fulfillment.
Is comic book printing the same as graphic novel printing?
The printing process is the same: full color CMYK digital printing on coated or uncoated paper. The difference is format. Comic books are typically saddle stitch floppies with 24 to 32 pages. Graphic novels are typically perfect bound trade paperbacks with 64 to 200 pages.
Do you print manga in Japanese reading order?
Yes. We print manga in either Western reading order (left to right) or Japanese reading order (right to left). For Japanese-style manga, configure your interior PDF in right-to-left page order and we bind it accordingly.
How to print your own comic book at home vs through a printer?
Printing comic books at home with a desktop inkjet or laser printer is possible for very small runs (1 to 5 copies), but the per-copy cost is usually $5 to $15 once you account for ink and quality paper. For runs of 25 or more, a professional comic book printer is both cheaper per copy and produces better color and binding quality.
How long does comic book printing take?
Total turnaround from file upload to delivery is 14 to 21 business days for US orders. This includes 24 hour file review, 24 hour digital proof delivery, 5 to 10 business days production, and 3 to 7 business days shipping. Rush production is available for Kickstarter and convention deadlines.
What is the best comic book printing service?
The best comic book printing service depends on your print run size and timeline. For 1 to 500 copies with fast turnaround and no minimums, an online printer like YourBookPress works well. For 1,000+ copies with longer lead times and the lowest per-copy cost, a specialty offset printer is more economical. For digital-first creators who do not want inventory, KDP Print and IngramSpark print one copy at a time.
